Cute! I love my hoop houses, except when the wind blows very strong. Then we have to stake them down and even tie them to trees.

We are going to Minn. from Arkansas in July via Hwy 71/I-35 to St Paul. I could use a few more Buckeye pullets/hens if anybody has any on or near that route. Thanks.

I am up in WI, about 25 minutes from St. Paul. But I do not have that many of them to spare right now, I only have 7, and they are 1-3 weeks old. And I just got 23 eggs yesterday, and put them in the incubator today!

Let me know if you find any as well... Im sure there are quite a few chicken people along the way, they just done have what you *WANT*... Hah!

I won't have any ready for you this trip. Sorry! I'm still getting started with the Buckeyes.

One of the JamesA Easter hatch boys has started calling the girls when he finds food, even before he has started crowing. And he came running to see what was up when the Sussex cockerel complained about being picked up. I kind of like these Buckeyes...

I have a couple "pullets" from the feed store. They are around 2 months old. 2 of the 6 "pullets" are getting a bit of red on their combs.. the others are still pale. Is this normal for a female's comb to redden that early or have I got a couple boys. Is there another way to sex them at this age?

Thanks!

The roosters not only get red in their comb, but get very distinct lines of bumps in their combs that the pullets seem to lack at that age. BUT that is not 100%.

With my hatchery buckeyes the roos were shinier and redder, even at 8 weeks, than the hens. The roos also very often had black hackle feathers. And yeah, more prominent, redder combs. The roos got distinct lines of bumps on the comb very early.

If it is noticeable, you probably have a couple of boys. At 8 weeks/ 2 months, one should be able to tell which are cockerels and which are pullets. I find the coloration of the comb to be the best method for sexing at younger ages. My sole 8 week old chick actually started crowing-- the earliest I've had one to start. At about 3-4 weeks, I had already determined the chick was a "HE" solely by a redder comb. Since it was my only chick, I wasn't even comparing him to a sibling or siblings-- so the comb method, either REDDER or PALE, is a very good way to sex early. I pretty much use that coupled with the chick's weight at that age (and that should tell you. The males will weigh more of course. Occasionally, I will have a heavy pullet but the comb will reveal her.

sorry I have not been on here or anywhere lately, but I just went through a big MOVE to a new home and farm. good to see the thread so active. How is everyone?
