How do you get invermectin injectable? All the dog/pet catalogs have it listed under meds requiring a prescription. SO can sevin be used on the birds directly as well as their living quarters?

Wow, folks, that's interesting info about mites and ivermectin. I'll look again for a mite count when I can. What does it mean to "blow through" the feathers? I just looked at the vent area and saw 1 black mite - quick inspection style.

Currently, I have the Ivermectin in the water (4cc/gal). I figured others could benefit from it too, but I can see how a few drops on the back of the neck would be more certain of treatment....I've been trying to figure out how to treat with it while they have access to other water, such as melting snow. Also, it's ivomec-plus, which includes another drug that treats liver flukes and something else. That's what I had on hand. I've placed an order with Jeffer's Supply for the ivermection regular (it's on sale right now!) Ivermection is also available from vets and from farm supply places.

This is the first time I've had trouble with mites, lice, yes, but not mites. I'll quit using grass hay as bedding I guess. I was trying to save the cost of buying bedding. Until I could get more pine needles and chip my own wood.

I've got ploy-vi-sol iron free to add to water, ACV, and also ordered some probiotics. I can give more molasses covered grain with the other feed. I have DE to spread with new bedding, which I'll pick up tomorrow when I head into town. I want to treat everybody with ivermectin, but that's going to have to wait a few days.

I still have to ask, IF he survives, should I breed him? If not, I need to cull him now rather than going to a lot of trouble. Some of this stuff I'll do anyway, like replacing bedding and treating the other chickens.

I don't consider mites like an illness that would keep me from breeding a rooster. If it turns out that mites is the problem and you get him cleared up, I would not hesitate to use him.

Chris, the Ivermectin that you refer to, is that Eprinex (the pour on solution) or the injectible? I bought the pour on because there is no withdrawal period for the eggs. I'm curious though if the injectible can also be used as a pour on? And if so, would you withdraw the eggs for a couple of weeks as you would if injected?

Btw, I hope you won't hold this against me but the rooster I mentioned that I lost, well that was one from Faux. So I'm anxious to get some more eggs from you.

Foxflower, if the problem with this rooster turns out to be solely a result of mites, I would not hesitate to breed him IF he is what I wanted him to be in all other respects. Now if it's a spinal deformity, some other illness, or something that I just wouldn't want passed on to the offspring, then I'd make good use of him with some noodles and a little celery, onions, and carrots.

God Bless,

I'm going to act as if it is a parasitically problem. If treatment for that doesn't work, then I'll do away with him. I think he's too skinny for the stew pot -- and I'd have to wait 2 weeks post ivermectin at least for his system to clean out. I'm new to buckeyes, and I did my best choosing one to keep, but I don't think he's a champion. Hard to tell in his condition now! I should look and see if I have a pre-illness picture of him.

Holy cow, um rooster -- progress! He's actually standing in a normal posture. He's none too steady on his feet, but he is walking around more and foraging. Go ivermectin, I guess. I wasn't sure if he was getting enough in the water, so I put a few drops on the back of neck this morning. Okay, and now I'm going sound stupid....I think the "mites" are actually lice, just not the same as I'm used to seeing. Their oblong with cream colored bodies and have black blotchy backs. There are bugs of all sizes on him, but they are variation of that coloring. I think the "black bug" I saw was moving quickly, and I didn't see that it was cream with black on it. Does it take a whole week or two to kill them all? Cause they are plentiful. I bought some game-bird feed today to feed him along with the other good stuff. They were out of pine shavings, so that's gonna wait. I'm acutally kinda surprised he's improved. I just had to attach this picture. Wadda ya know? Doesn't look like the same bird.

He look much better! If you can find eggs on the feathers then they are lice. Lice live on the bird and mites live in bedding and housing and come out usually at night and feed on the birds blood. (I think)
Good luck !

It definitely sounds like you have lice from the description you give. Mites are pinhead-sized little round bugs that look like spots running around. The more oblong bugs are lice.
Punky, mites will live on the birds as well. There are different types/kinds of mites just as there are lice.

One thing I neglected to mention previously, be careful when treating for mites/lice and pay attention to the recommended dosages/treatments as overdoing it can cause sterility. Especially in the males.

God Bless,
