Well I welcomed 7 new Buckeyes into the world yesterday and today. One more is still in the egg (not sure if it will make it) What darlings. I took pics but they aren't that good. I will try to get better ones and post.

My buckeye rooster is turning mean. He bit me when I went to change out thier water today. Clamped down like a crawdad on a chicken neck and wouldn't let go. Brought blood he did.

There's lots of things to try to let him know who's boss. Some seem cruel some not practical. The major thing is, GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS YOU ARE THE BOSS! Thats what matters. You can do a forum search for recipes too!

Maybe I missed this or maybe it has not been brought up yet but, I'd like to know about the broodiness of Buckeyes. Is it common or are they infrequent broodies? Anyone know? Laura?

Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric

(And a very Happy New Year to you all!)

Buckeyes exhibit what I feel is a nice level of broodiness. They are about halfway between a non-broody breed like Leghorns and an overly broody breed like Silkies.

You can certainly let them set, hatch, and rear their own young (Chris can speak to this, as he's done so, I have not.) But they are not so broody that they'll only lay six eggs and then be a screaming hissing bundle of feathers every time you reach into the nest box for the next six months.

So they're sort of "Medium" when it comes to broody. Not too much, not too little.

Well, I welcomed only 4 new Buckeyes into the world in the last 2 days. I have 1 more egg that looks good and I think there is movement. I lost one that had started and it got shrink wrapped.

If I would have helped it last night it probably would have been ok. I just didn't want to interfere too soon. Well here are some pics of the ones that made it.

Just for fun here is the first one pictured right after it hatched. It wore its "hat" for almost a whole day.

I didn't want to open the bator to help it take it off.
