Buckeye Breed Thread

We attended the Missouri State Poultry Association Annual Fall Show yesterday (APA double judged). I am very pleased to say two of our cockerels won Champion American and Reserve Champion American in BOTH shows!!

Judging the first show was Larry Denny, an APA General judge out of Missouri. He placed #59 (first picture) Champion American and Reserve Champion Large Fowl, with #70 (second picture) Reserve Champion American.

Monty Fitzgerald, an APA General judge from Texas, placed #70 (second picture) as Champion American and #59 as Reserve Champion American (first picture). Due to the double judging, the cage cards were not marked in the second show as to the Champion and Reserve Champion Large Fowl. Champion Large Fowl went to the Buff Orpington (owned by Fred Farthing, same placing as in the first show), but I don't know about the Reserve.

I'm looking for someone with Buckeyes in the north Fl / South Ga aera I'm close to interstate 75 , intersted in chickens , chicks , hatching eggs . Not interested in showing chickens so pure bred culls would be fine ,

I think thaat # 59 would be considered a good head on any LF Dual Purpose roo.

Does anyone here have a handle on how many Buckeyes there are in the US? How many breeders?

The ALBC lists then as "threatened."

Threatened: Fewer than 1,000 breeding birds in the United States, with seven or fewer primary breeding flocks, and estimated global population less than 5,000.

They've come a long way in popularity, production qualities, and SOP quality (thanks in large part to the ALBC). As nearly all breeds, they could use breeders. That does look like a nice male, he's got a nice thick skull and shanks. Nice color also.

Congrats Janet on your win, always nice to see Buckeyes doing well in shows.

his is why I am inquiring, ALBC has been way off in the past but I am trying to find out on these. I am not knocking ALBC, its hard to get a handle on chicken breed numbers.

I have room to add another heritage homesteader breed and building sheds now for the spring and want to pick one. I am adding the Iowa Blue, and another European breed but have watched a couple of these others for years. They all need breeders for sure. Seems like so much of the activity on the forum concerns exotic color additions to unendangered breeds.

So I am trying to focus on the older breeds that make good homesteader flocks.

Odd. Did I lose a post? I thought I had posted saying in the census done last year the ALBC had about 2409 birds.
