There is no way to sex them at day olds for the untrained -- I have unsuccessfully attempted the wing pin feathers. It is not remotely reliable.

Even older chicks, they can trick you by comb, by leg thickness, feathers. By and large, as they age, the males' combs will be redder & larger, their legs are usually thicker and their feathers are shinier & the males weigh more as they get older -- there are exceptions though.

Hello, all! I have just finished reading the last 150 pages or so of the thread. What a wealth of information! I am searching for chicks or hatching eggs for my uncle, but I haven't seen anyone post from Louisiana. Anyone in the area? Chris and Jen - I think you two may be the nearest to me.

I will be driving from Baton Rouge, LA, to Pensacola, FL, on the weekend of 04/22. Any breeders between or close to the 2 cities? If not, does anyone in the states neighboring LA ship hatching eggs or chicks?

Thanks!
Brandy

Jen works in Monticello, Arkansas, about an hour north of Monroe, Louisiana. She lives about 30 minutes east of here.

I'm looking for a Buckeye rooster for my flock near western or west central Minnesota. I got some chicks this spring, but would like a rooster from a different bloodline so I can breed my own. If anyone has one to sell, please PM me. Thanks!

See chicks in the nest box to the far right?

These 2 hens (sisters) are working jointly with ALL the chicks.................

She hatched all but 1 egg, seen still in her nest...................Awesome heritage breed.

OBTW~~~~~~~ The Java hen was not amused, and wanted out of the Coop with the big red bully Mommas.the Buck Sisters did not like the little black chicks..........so she is moved to a ajoining coop..........

Yes I am infested with peeps !

Here's a pic of my rooster, Brutus! I think he's a handsome fellow. He won a ribbon for his previous owner. I aquired him when he was two years old. He's a perfect gentleman too. Here he is with a few of his girlfriends. I've got a couple of Buckeye hens, but they weren't in the picture.

In general (realizing that every bird is different) how are the manners of Buckeye roosters?
