Gosh tailfeathers, you must be very strong. Breaking the neck is something I cannot do well; so I prefer to use a knife to the jugular. I recently had the benefit of learning from a very skilled butcher who butchers ALL his own meats. Because I cannot break the neck sufficently well, his method is working for me. I do like your method, I think I"m just not strong enough. Or I need to practice more. THanks for sharing--safety first.

Through your hand?

Tailfeathers, that must have hurt. When I would hang the bird, I would start out with the belly toward me, and once it was secure, turn it around so it's back is facing me. As I was opening the beak, the head would be pulled toward me almost horizontal. My fingers were on either side of it's mouth squeezing slightly to get the mouth open, the rest of my hand was under it's "chin".

Think of the classic pose for Hamlet contemplating Yorick's skull and you've got it.

When I pull out the camera, they all go running off. It is difficult getting a good picture.

And they run for the shade, too. How helpful!!! I try to get photos on a cloudy day . . . and shoot a bunch; brother in law is a professional photographer, he says the ability to get one good shot is very low. 1 out of 20-30 pics.

Went to the NE bantam show today in Middleboro Mass with oabout 600 birds; Saw Mr Rhodes and was hoping to see his buckeyes. He did not bring any for this show. I'm promising myself I will buy eggs from him in the spring and hatch a few dozen. He said he ships a LOT of hatching eggs.

Arielle, you misunderstood me. I don't break the neck. With the method I described, I just pull the head right off. It doesn't take much effort or strength at all.

God Bless,
