I'm really loving these chicks! My last few hatches have been really spazzy, these little guys are super mellow by comparison. Took some pictures this morning, the first 3 times the flash went off they jumped a little bit, then they ignored it after that. And they practically ask me to pick them up when I open the brooder door.

I love this picture. It needs a mobster style caption I think.

Like,"You talkin' to me??" LOL!

Jen,

Have you ate any of your buckeyes. I plan to get a few when I get my dorkings and am curious on the meat. I hear the color of the meat in general is much darker and many ppl can't get past that to want to eat the chicken. As you are a breeder can you lend some insight on that?

Larry,

We don't find that to be true at all. Perhaps the meat is slightly darker than your store-bought Cornish Cross meat, that would be true. But also not pumped full of salted water, not injected with antibiotics/hormones, and having been raised to run free on grass and scratch in the dirt, the quality of the muscle tissue is going to be different than a bird which just moseys around in a big broiler house.

As well, having raised our share of "Frankenbirds" (Cornish Cross) ourselves, I can tell you those birds are just lumps. They are perfectly happy to toddle about their pen, sitting down in front of the feed trough, then toddling over to the waterer, then sitting down in a pile together. They seem to have no desire to run and chase a butterfly the way a Buckeye would. So their muscles never do get the fast-twitch tissue developed the way a Buckeye does. And I believe that's part of the difference in the look and taste.

Personally, we find the Buckeyes we butcher to be absolutely delicious! In fact, I am in the process of pulling together a bunch of recipes using Buckeye meat and eggs now, as soon as I have them ready I will post a link to them here for you all. Watch this page for it soon!

I would like to note that in the past, we have been asked not to post information in this thread leading folks to other forums and websites.

I'm guessing that doesn't apply to signature lines since every time you post, you have a link to your discussion forum AND your websites.

Or maybe "I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your home on the wedding day of your daughter. May their first child be a masculine child"

That sounds great about the recipes. That would make sense about the cornish. I want something that is not going to be a bump on the log, that will not teach my kids anything if they think the way of life for a chicken is to eat and poop and not move. I think that could turn them off. What do you think about buckeye and dorkings in the same pen (females)
