What were the other dual purpose birds that you have raised over the years? And what line of buckeyes do you have?

Hi Arielle, I have raised and butchered many breeds over the last 30 years. I put a lot of our culls in the freezer even bantams. But for close comparison we have butchered Delawares, RIR's, New Hampshires, Easter Eggers, Barred Rocks, Cornish, etc. This batch of Buckeye's really had substantially more to them than any of these I have listed, even the pure bred dark cornish. Laura or Jim correct me if I am wrong but my Buckeyes came from Jim Hall in Arkansas and I believe they are Laura's line blended with another one Jim had.

LOL, butchering shows all the muscling, or the lack of it. I put about 45 cckl in the freezer of various breeds and crosses. Not enough muscling among my current stock , tastes good BUT, I want more meat for the 5 months they have been eating. None are buckeyes.

How well do the BUckeye hold up to the cold rainy weather? We get a variety of weather here in southern New England. THe two extremes are cold and rainy and a week of 100 degree heat.

Are buckeye regarded as tight feathering types? ANd does a tight feathering help to shed water? Many of my current breeds of chickens do not enjoy the cold rainy weather, and I TOTALY agree with them; Having and experimental flock is providing some answers and generating a LOT of questions.

I recently helped a guy sort his flock of buckeyes, and I was amazed at how tough they are. I'm sure that those of you who have raised buckeyes all know this already.
He had six cockerels that ran loose with no shelter and here in northwest Ohio it's been cold, damp and rainy and they seem to be doing great.
He also told me that on two occasions one of them fought off a hawk.
I knew they were a hardy breed but I was still amazed!
Also the temperament is great, not flighty at all. I was very impressed by this breed
