A question to you Buckeye breed experts...is it at all normal for a Buckeye to go broody? I have six currently and two of them have just up and went broody on me! I don't have a roo with my layers, but I decided if she had her heart set on brooding, I would pacify her with about two dozen bantam Cochin eggs that were just about to go in the bator...it's been my experience that hens make the best incubator out there. Anyway...back to the origional question...I was under the impression that this was not a broody breed....just luck then?

Thanks!

Yes, Buckeyes are a breed that readily & often goes broody.

Anyone have a guess how many eggs a one plus year old Buckeye hen can successfully cover?

It depends on the size of the hen and the size of the eggs. If the eggs are large & jumbo like mine, only 9-10. When I set Guinea eggs under my hen, she could take 12-14 of them as they are smaller.

Sagibaro, so uplifting to hear good news and that incubators really can work well! Congrats!. Got pics??
We got back that afternoon and naturally I made a beeline for the incubator. Wait a sec...one beak...two...hey, there's another one...Honey, they ALL HATCHED.

The shipped Buckeye eggs from Chris have gone into lockdown late Thursday night and as of this morning on day 20 three out of 10 are pipping! He packed them really well and USPS was very careful with them and they got here with no problems and now they are hatching!!!! Yipppeeeee! If you want to know how to wrap them and send them successfully, ask Chris!

These little Buckeyes are hatching out so quick and easy! I look into the bator to see a little pip - an hour later I look to see how the egg is doing and voila'! It is already hatched and the baby is up and running around! Soon as they all get done I will get pix!

Buckeyes do seem to just jump out of the shell, don't they? I've had other breeds that took their sweet time about it, but the Buckeyes are very vigorous. Congrats!

We got our little Buckeyes yesterday and they're HILARIOUS. They're way more feisty than our 1 wk old Black Copper Marans and it's been so funny watching them together.

That is a photo worth framing. They sure are cute.

I wonder if all Buckeyes are feisty or if different breeders have lines that contain different levels of feistiness. I have BC Marans, as you do, and some groups are more feisty than others. Most of mine are super calm and mild. I don't get my Buckeyes until next month.
