So what is the secret?

I'm a little superstitious, both times that I have had excellent hatches from shipped eggs the packing method was similar.

* Cardboard pulp egg cartons, not styrofoam cartons (Why would this make a difference? And yet, it seemed to)
* Eggs individually cocooned in paper towelling / tissue paper and placed in cartons with large end up
* Egg cartons securely wrapped in small-bubble bubble wrap, taped around
* Wrapped cartons surrounded in box by additional layers of loose, large gauge bubble wrap, fluffy plastic and/or air pillows

I have plans to ship some eggs of my own this spring, using the same method since I've had such good results from it.

Tissue paper around the eggs really does look amateurish - but no complaints for how it works!

I would love to find/purchase a few more eggs...Laura, do you or anyone else on the list have any extras I could purchase? I just lost my one and only pullet and am loaded with roos

so I need some new kido's to hatch and raise.

I just got 25 buckeye chicks on Friday. Two arrived DOA. Had two weak ones which I pulled out and put in a separate box with a separate brooder light. Both died the next day. The next morning I woke up and found one dead and another one weak. That one died. This morning I found two more dead, and now I have one more that looks and acts the same as the others. I spoke with the breeder last night and he has no explanations. The birds that have all died were smaller than the rest. I have them brooding in two connected large uhaul boxes, am using DuMors non-medicated chick starter, used Avia Charge 2000 from McMurray's in the water the first few days. There is plenty of ventilation, two feeders and waterers and no crowding for space or competition for food. They are inside my house so it's not a ventilation issue and I don't see any abnormal stools to indicate some other problem. No one else I have talked to who has kept chickens has ever lost this many. And no one seems to have any suggestions. It was purchased from a breeder, not a hatchery and they were not vaccinated. They were supposed to have hatched either Monday or Tuesday per the breeder.

I would appreciate any insight anyone has.

They are showing signs of being comfortable under the light (no crowding, no donut holes) and they are in my dining room, so no drafts. We have hot water baseboard heat so there is no real humidity issues, no gas or carbon monoxide issues. I have 16 guinea fowl chicks (8 were just sold) that have been eating and drinking the same food and water and all survived, so I don't think it's a feed issue.

Did you individually dip each chick's beak in the water? swap one at a time to a second place where you can observe for a few minutes, tempt with some sprinkled crumbles, it should entice them to eat. This age it really sounds like not eating or drinking issue. Put a little sugar in their water and offer yogurt (dannon plain w. live cultures is a good one) and scrambled egg.
