Buckeye Breed Thread

I have hatched my first buckeyes. I have 3 from Matt John and 2 from another BYC breeder. I am surprised at the difference in color of the chicks. They are growing and developing well. Hopefully there will be enough to mature and have my beginning with the buckeye breed. I keep up with this thread so I will have help when it is time for all those questions ahead.

The Buckeye chick color variation is due to their heritage. Good luck with them, mine are growing like weeds!

I am now a proud Buckeye owner! I have been watching them at shows for a couple of years now and have been watching this thread for a while too. I got some eggs from Jim and have some hatching and more in the incubator so should have a good start now!!

I just have one beautiful Buckeye hen that I got from a local breeder that decided she no longer wanted to breed them. I have read most of this thread (no small feat at 293 pages!) because I adore her so much. Seriously, I have nine girls in my flock, and she is by far my favorite. She is so intelligent. She is so beautiful. She is sweet, but as others have said, is not needy. She gives me this look some times, and I feel like we are communicating. I know it's crazy, but she is my buddy! She waits for me to come out in the morning, and gives me that adorable "screech" that I have never heard from another chicken! She's the first one at the door, ready to greet me, get a treat, and roam around the yard. I sit in my chair and watch them peck around, and she always comes around two or three times to "talk" to me. Sometimes she lets me pet her, but I think she's doing it more for my benefit than hers.

Sorry to go on and on, but I love this girl! I plan to increase my flock as soon as I can, and I want more Buckeyes! Best. Chicken. EVER!!!

Best. Chicken. EVER!!!

I don't have nearly enough experience with chickens to reiterate this statement, but I do love my Buckeyes. They have just the right energy for me, and they are also pretty and easy to handle.

Buckeyes are great aren't they?

They are. It turns out my neighbor a few "doors" down has some Buckeye hens (among many other breeds). He has been a good source of information and his hens are a hoot. Hanging out in his yard will demystify chicken raising for anyone.

It really makes everything easier when you actually see how simple it is to take care of chickens and to enjoy some really great protein from their fruit and their meat.

I need help.

The time has come to learn how to efficiently dispatch a chick or juvenile Buckeye. I'm tender-hearted and cringe at the thought, but it must be done.

Any suggestions or tips you may provide would be most appreciated.
