I have a new clean rubbermaid garbage can I keep the DE in, stays dry.
I sprinkle it, a big scoop with 1/2 bag of all purpose sand, and dump & mix in the mortar tub, and each coop has one.
Clean stuff out of it with a cat litter "spoon" and each bird will dust themselves.
That is how we do it here.

I have DE and had been using it. I did buy an extra large kitty litter pan and put send mixes with permithrin in it for the infected birds. I will change that out in about a week. After that, if there is no sign of bugs, I will refill the pan with sand and DE. In the pen, with the birds that I could not find lice on I put more DE in their sand. Will keep an eye on them all. Thanks for your advice!

She shook right after I snapped the pic & sent out a plume of dust like she was on fire!!

Now this is more like it, discussionwise!

I'm in CA and just obtained six Buckeyes I haven't yet met. The hens are older, barely laying, and a roo from Sandhill Preservation Center (don't know where the hens came from, suspect the same source, different hatch). The price is to take them and enjoy them as live chickens, so that's what I plan to do.

I'm more concerned about making more Buckeyes to disperse to those who can appreciate them (hopefully of good quality, of course!) than I am about egg laying frequency...but since I have a bunch of banty Orpingtons (love love LOVE them!), I figure I can put Buckeye eggs under whomever is setting at the time...I hope!

So...any advice, anybody else out here on the West coast (N. Central CA)??

I am a novice. The chicken coop was delivered last Saturday and the fencing should be complete this weekend. The fenced area will permit free range grazing. After looking over many reference sites, Buckeyes are the bird of choice and I am looking for a source for started birds. My family lives in Hume, Virginia 22639 and would appreciate information from any breeders that are close enough to provide the first small flock - 6-8 hens (and, perhaps, a rooster.) We look forward to being active members of this thread.
