Buckeye Chicken Breeders

Thank you for the info on Buckeyes, Pathfinder. So they are a good sized bird? They sound like Wyandottes I've had in temperament. Thing is that my old flock is being run by my Australorp hen right now since my Maran rooster passed on a few weeks ago. Old flock of 25 reduced to 7 now. I have 12 California Gray chicks to raise in March. Have you seen the Buckeyes in mixed flocks? Do they hold their own like Wyandottes? I know some folks never consider mixing up flocks, but I prefer to do my part in keeping order.

Yes, they are a larger bird, and should hold their own well. I don't think many breeds would push a Buckeye around, but I don't think they'd look for a fight either. I haven't had other breeds in with mine than White Leghorns because I breed mine for sale (and with the White Leghorn hens, I know not to hatch those eggs, natch.)

Well, now they don't just look attractive now. I just may have to pick up some chicks in March.

Michael Apple.......PM me is you would like to get some information on chicks this spring. I know a few people who may be able to get you some nice quality buckeyes. Good luck to you in your new breed. My buckeyes are very gentle with my other breeds. They don't back down but are very social and gentle around most others as long as you have adequite space for multiple roosters.

I agree with Laura here. My Buckeye is the most easy-going of all my roosters. When I first introduced him to the flock, my Barred rock cockerel thought he was top dog because my Buckeye wouldn't challenge him. However, over time, although I've never seen them mix it up, the Buckeye now goes wherever he wants to and does whatever he wants with no complaints from the BR. My bantam Silver Spangled Hamburgs, though, are another story. They are constantly challenging one another and occasionally an especially bold one will hackle up at my Buckeye. While he doesn't seem eager to get in a fight, he doesn't back down either and the Hamburgs usually come away much chastened.

In summary, I'd say Buckeyes, while not overly aggressive, will more than stick up for themselves when called upon to do so.

Quote: I am new to chicks - just so you know to judge what I say with what I don't know LOL

I had 6 chicks to start -- 2 Buckeyes, 2 Black Australorps & 2 gold sex links - all hens born last May. The buckeyes are def my favs. One used to jump up on the brooder when she saw me coming - was the first & only one to escape the brooder. At any rate - back to the topic - they get along fine with the others. The GSL's are the most productive, but also the most food aggressive (with people) - The BA's are the watch chicks - very loud to sound warning when hawks are overhead - truly amazing. The BA's are also very productive. The GSL's are the only ones 'pushed around' -- but they deserve it IMHO!. I have seen one of the buckeyes moving a GSL around on the roost - outta my way.

But love my buckeyes - will take the slightly lower production with them for the ease of handling & personality. they'll be what I add to the flock next year. ok maybe a BA or 2 as watch chicks since I have no roosters.

Haven't had good luck with Gold sex links. I really am fond of my last couple Wyandottes and one Australorp though. Since my Maran Rooster passed away, my Aussie is now the head honcho. My old flock is reduced to 7 now. Early last month, I ordered 12 California Gray chicks for March and wish I would have gone with Buckeyes. There are good egg producing strains of Buckeyes out there I've read about, if that is what one seeks. I don't want to mix things up too much breedwise since I want to find my breed preference and produce good genetics from sound stock. The Buckeye is an attractive bird all around.

I would say any rooster is going to make themselves known. I would rather hear chickens than drums any day.
