Buckeye chicken

I'm a new member and just got 7 buckeye chicks from Meyer hatchery. They're all looking great and are curious and active. Love the breed already, can't wait to introduce them to my leghorns.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Make sure the chicks are 3 to 4 months of age before you mix them into an adult flock. They need to be fairly large in size so they are not harmed by the bigger beaks. Keep them in a caged or fenced off area as they are growing up so the flock is always around them. When mixing day comes, make sure to put out a couple extra feed and water stations as the bigger flock can guard these areas and starve out the new birds. Always intervene if it turns bloody.

It takes a month or so for the original flock to except any new birds.

Enjoy your new chicks and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I agree with the other members. Rosie is a cockerel. Sorry.( I hope your other chickens are hens. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Thanks for the info. I built a totally new coop to accommodate a larger flock. The buckeyes will stay in there until they're ready to be introduced and I will move the other chickens into the new coop once they're all friendly. They're brooding in a totally separate area.
