Buckeye Chickens

The breed was intended to do well at free range that is how and why they were developed in the 1890s jumping in the truck for a feed run to tractor supply was not a option the birds needed to produce with little to no maintenance by the farmer ! That being said the buckeye is more than a capable breed for the intended porpoise !!!!

I know this is an old thread but I just had to comment. I happen to have a Buckeye rooster because someone dropped him off at my house, now I have a friend for life.
He is very friendly, he does not want to be petted but he does want to be within a foot of me and is very responsive to my voice.
Now I have NEVER had a chicken before and know not what to do, he has patiently worked with me while I have learned how to take care of him.
"Buckey" is never caged, he runs the property freely, he roosts in our workshop up on top of the gardening shelf, he does like to come in the house and herd our two cats and hang out with them,
he also just likes to come in and hang out with us.
In my opinion this breed would be a good companion bird. He is very protective of the property, and is always respectful and friendly to my husband and I.
Eventually we can start a small coup and raise about 4 girls.

And that is a nice looking Buckeye male you have there! You indeed have a friend for life! They are an extremely people friendly breed and a good first chicken because they make chicken keeping easy -- they are a forgiving breed for a beginner -- very hardy and easy to handle. Mine are always so curious and stay right up under me.

We love our Buckeye hen - she's such a character and such a good layer -- Kids call her "Flash" -- I think because of the yellow legs -- she eats out of our hands and is a funny little girl..
