buckeye chickens

Thirteen months? Wow, that blows the "butcher roosters before they're 20 weeks old or they'll be tough" out o the water.

Of course, I don't think I can get my husband to wait that long before I let him butcher any. He loves his roast chicken.

Hi folks! New guy here.

I just finished reading all of the posts regarding the Buckeye, and now I'm certain that this is the breed I want to raise. I grew up with chickens, but it's been a while. I'm very much looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

I DEFINITELY want "pure" Buckeyes, and I want to work with a breeder/hatchery that I can thrust. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? I was going to order from either Ideal or Myer this spring, but I'd like your input first. I'll be buying between 25 and 50 birds, and I'll be free ranging.

FYI...our website is below if you're interested...our farm is just a concept at this point, but my wife and I have a knack for pulling off the impossible.

Here is a picture of my Buckeye hen, Quickie. She is the only hen who lays her eggs on the floor of the coop (she does make a nest first) instead of in the nest boxes.

I'm attracted to the Buckeye for several reasons, but I'm thinking that their color must be an asset. We have a huge problem with hawks in our area, and I absolutely want to free range my birds.

Of course, I'll have them safely locked up at night, but it's the day-time predators (hawks in particular) that concern me.

I have lots of questions folks...bear with me. I'm glad I found this forum.

I'm in the process of building a coop, and I'm going to build it big enough to give my Buckeyes 2-3 square feet of floor space. They'll also have roosting space, nesting space, etc. They'll only be in the coop at night. Is this enough space? I read on the ALBC site that they don't do particularly well being confined.

Thanks!

Yikes! Are Ideal's buckeyes really that bad?

I just bought a batch of buckeye eggs from someone whose flock is a mixture of X-Treme Gamebirds' hens, and a rooster from a person who shows buckeyes out of Colorado (ie, I hope, nice quality roo :) )

What do you all think of X-Treme Gamebirds' buckeyes?

Finally, is there anyone out there who bought buckeyes from Bill Braden / Land of Tobe? I'd have loved to get eggs from him but he's sold out well into the summer :-( It would be neat if I could get just a few "2nd generation" Bill Braden hatching eggs from another member here. ...

:)

Best - KR
