My buckeyes are stuffed into a 6 by 8 foot coop with around 20 other birds and they seem fine, so I'd say your space should do nicely. Plus you're further south than me so they won't get cooped up in winter as long as mine.

I'm writing to share an observation, and see if anyone else has seen (smelt) the same thing...

My silkies, polish and other chickens have a pleasant, feathery BO. If I sniff one of them, it is like smelling a feather boa, almost odorless, maybe a little dusty, with a hint of polished leather or fresh bedsheets.

The buckeyes on the other hand, which I dearly love, have a very faint but unmistakeable peculiar smell. It's something like the sweet, corny smelling liquid found in a can of canned sweet corn... with maybe a hint of the scent of water in which artichokes have been boiled, or perhaps toes. It doesn't seem to be coming from any particular place on the chicken, and it proves elusive whenever I try to investigate. However, when a buckeye passes close by, it wafts out, very subtle, I'd almost thought I was imagining it at first. Maybe it's their breath.

...Everyone is eating the same thing, buckeyes and the other breeds, so it's not a diet issue.

Here's another question: Is it just me, or is my one buckeye chick the loudest chick on the planet? Are they all that loud?

At what age should the sex of Buckeyes be apparant? My chicks are 8 weeks old and I am struggling to tell the males from the females. The pea comb makes it so difficult! I have one that has a pretty light colored pea comb so I am thinking it is a female, but I am stuck on the others. Is there any type of feather coloring that I could use as a clue? I noticed that photos of Buckeye roos have dark greenish tails, and some of my Buckeyes do have a few greenish feathers. Do the females have any green on them, or are they only brown?

Love, love, love Buckeyes. Little secret.... we MAY have some coming on mid-september thru October. If you don't mind brooding chicks in the fall, it may be the perfect time to get them. I have 2 and I just love them. Taste good too!

For all you Buckeye chicken fans out there here is some info. Go to the ALBC site under resouces (link on the left ) there are 3 articals about how to do breeding for heritage chickens. These were from a Buckeye breeder. If you want to know who is breeding these guys join the ALBC and get the breder list. There are many on there that are working with this breed.

Also there is a Buckeye breeders seminar being held in OH. Info on that is on the rare breed yahoo group. Enjoy.

Unfourtantly the seminar was delayed until October this year. It was supposed to be next Tuesday but there wasn't enough people that was able to make it.

So anyone that is inerested should go.

I'm getting 100 eggs from various breeders from N.C. on Wednesday being shipped here.... These are all from breeders from the ALBC including Jinette Beringer (sp?) She is also bringing 12 adult breeders for me to work with when she comes up in October to host the seminar.

I will be working closely with her and the ALBC to try and establish a good base breeding stock here in Ohio along with a handfull of other breeders to try improve the existing stock.

So with that said.... by this time next year and even possibly in the fall we may have some quality hatching eggs available.

By "good" breeding stock, what qualities are you selecting for? Jinette, and the ALBC, how about their goals? I'm asking because I'm selecting in my own new buckeye flock for certain characteristics, and would like to know what else is going on out there.

NB. I'm shooting for vigorous, calm, friendly, birds that grow out of their chick down quickly, and put on weight well. They're not old enough yet for me to make any decisions about egg characteristics or lay rate. I plan to make sure they continue to look like buckeyes, of course, in case you were worried,
