What would be the best rooster to breed to my Buff Orpington hens to create nice colorful chicks?

a nice barnivalder ( pref blue/ splash laced) or a silver laced Wyandotte. these will give some mottly looking things but also some nice laced ones . another one would be anything multy coloured tho once again you will prob get some very ugly things

Buff orp mated to any of the breeds you just mention will give you Only more Buff(on the red side) like birds..

Buffs are about the most powerful genome out there, using more powerful phenotypes would do the trick,

I would cross it to barred rocks and will hatch very nice color and pattern birds

They would all look like badly barred Barred Rocks with a BR sire.

Here are some that Cuban Longtails hatched years ago out of my BR roo over Buff Orp hens, pics grabbed from an old thread on the forum:

I agree. Using barring genes will give you something different even though you will still get buff colors. Maybe if you breed the birds you hatch to an easter egger, you'll get more colorful birds.

I believe you have missed the point of this particular forum which is breeding to the Standards and not cross breeding for colorful poultry. We need to keep this forum on topic, there are other forums created for the purpose of discussing random crosses.

Thanks,

Bo

I disagree ,This is the "Genetics" Section of the forum, why on earth was bundled with the SOP threads is beyond me, I have already voiced my concerns about it, we need the "Genetics and Outcrossing" section moved the the General section, leave the SOP clear

Not dismissing genetics as not belonging but please read the direction of the forum at the beginning before diving off the high board. Serious breeders with serious breeding/genetic improvements to standard breed poultry in accordance with the APA and ABA Standards. The question posed here was looking for colorful combinations which lends no specific direction to what color combination is desired or if a specific intent other than a colorful flock is desired. This is the main reason the BYC is looked upon unfavorably by serious breeders of Standard Bred poultry, because discussions that begin with good intent that quickly go off on tangents of green egg laying Barred Plymouth Rocks or feather legged Rhode Island Reds. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my birds and that is first and foremost but I also have a breeding plan to improve each breed/variety I am working with and I fully understand that is not everyone's cup of tea. However, when a forum is started with the specific purpose of discussing the breeding, genetics and improvement of standard bred poultry it would be nice to honor that goal and not insert threads about indiscriminate matings for the sake of seeing what one gets.
And with that I guess I am done here.

Blessings to all,

Bo

the name of this sub forum should be Exhibition, & Breeding to the Standard of Perfection NOT genetics as most of you lot dont know and dont care about genetics, all you care is about breeding to the SOP, a new section of "Genetics and Outcrossing" should be created in a separate sub forum so I dont have to be dealing with this Nonsense

The name of this section is Exhibition, GENETICS, and Breeding to the Standard of Perfection. THREE separate, semi-related topics. There is nothing in the title or in the statements made prior to splitting this section of to imply that the genetics was ONLY for SOP breeding! Indeed, the sticky on this section begins with "The Exhibition and Breeding to the Standard of Perfection forum has been created for those with breeder quality stock to have more serious poultry discussions. This includes discussions on breeding to the standard, genetics, exhibition, breeding strategies, breeding for specific traits, etc." Note that it does not say "genetics of breeding to the standard." I believe that genetics was included here because many of the genetics discussions are serious in that we can and do get into discussion of genes and gene combinations and what they do. As compared with "see my new pet chicken, Fluffy; isn't she sweet!"
