So we just got 6 chicks last Friday and are now thinking that we want to add some ducklings to the mix. I am looking at the Buff ducklings at Meyer Hatchery.... Can anyone tell me if that is a good first-timer breed? The description reads "very hardy and friendly" which sounds like a good starter duck for us. Any input?

Thanks in advance!

When ordering ducklings, I looked at Buffs and almost chose them. From what I read on Metzer Farm's website, they are good layers and calm. They are also a beautiful tan color. They seem like a great breed to have as pets/first timers. I hope to have one in the future. :)

Also (and this maybe a stupid question), how can you tell if you have a male of female duck? Can you tell at all when they’re ducklings?

You cannot tell when they are ducklings unfortunately, unless you sex them which is painful to them and hard so is not recommend.. Around 4-5 weeks or so they should start getting their "voices" the males will have a raspy not so much of a quack, as the females will have a loud and obvious one. When they are mature, the males will get curly tail feathers in the back as well. :)
