Hello,
I've been reading all the various threads on chicken who have lost their ability to stand/walk. There is some great information, but I thought I would post my own situation as well for input.
Here's the run down:
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
She is about 1 yr old Buff Orpington with normal weight compared to my other two hens.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
She is not able to stand or walk. She can wobble side to side, no forward or backward motion. She tends to tip forward when trying to use her legs. After watching her, her right side does seem a little more responsive than her left. She is alert, but more docile than normal. Her eyes seem to be normal, but they seem to dialating and contrating as if they are trying to focus on a consistent basis. Her comb has good color, but it's droppy.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
About a day and a half so far.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
None that's visible.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
We couldn't find her at night when we put the girls to bed. Found her the next morning in the pasture unable to move.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
She will eat on her own, but not seek out food. She won't drink on her own, we've been watering her with a dropper.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Hasn't pooped since we found her, but she hasn't had much to eat either.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
We brought her inside and put electrolyte/vitamin powder in her water.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Would like to treat her myself, if possible. Will take her to the vet if she doesn't improve in the next day or so.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
Can get photos posted later this evening.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
She is in a large cardboard box with dry straw, in the laundry room.
Thanks ahead of time for any help or input!
