After losing 3 out of our original 4 chicks, I went to a local feed store and purchased four more chicks. Two were buff orpington, one white chick and one black sex link chick. The two buffs were obviously older then the other chicks at the store, so were probably about a week or so old, maybe more, already kind of the ugly duckling look going on. One had a reddish head, the other was all blond. Well, here we are three weeks later and they are both really feathering out RED.. some blond mixed in but not like I would expect with a chick that was buff. Their bodies look like an orpington, they are much larger then the other chicks but then, they always were. Does anyone have a guess what they might be?

How much are the feathers in? Without a picture it's hard to tell. I will say that I had some Buff Orpington chicks this spring and I thought they made a mistake because they were feathering in reddish colored. Once the feathers were completely grown they were the right color. I wonder if that's what you're seeing, too?
