*Buff Orpington Thread!*

They are! They ARE! That is what I refer to them as too. (Great minds...

I love my orpingtons. I had mongrel bantams growing up and never felt safe around them or affectionate towards them.
I'm new to chickens and am raising my first set of chicks, but my friendliest one is a BO. "She" (hopefully!!) always runs to greet me and always climbs in my hand to be picked up.

Such a doll

I need help my roosters had a fight and 1 (big guy my favorite) was really hurt.

He is at the vet now, not sure if he will make it, he can't walk.

If he recovers how do I reintroduce him back to the flock with out causing another fight. They have never fought before so I don't know what brought this on

. I have 16 hens 2 roosters. An 8 to 1 ratio should keep them busy enough so they won't fight. 8 is a lot of girl friends.

I hope he makes it!!!!!

What did you find? Sounds like it wants a momma hen.
HI, I think the problem was it was not eating.............took water down like crazy but was not interested in the food I tried to give it.
About 11:00 last night I tried one more time.............wet and mushed chickstarter.got some in the side of it's beak and it perked up.
Was very funny like " hey, that's not bad".then it picked small amounts from my finger.............
She cried about an hour after I put her in the brooder and that was it..........she is fine now.......................

The hen in this picture still does this, even though she's way bigger now. I just got home, and the Buffs were the first to come running to the gate. Though, to be fair, the Brahmas give them a run for their money in the goofey affection arena.

My Buffs sure are confusing!! Lol Its been nice today, but going to be pretty cold again tonight, so I went out to plug up the heated water fountain. There sat a Buff, sleeping in the nest box. Of course, it makes me giddy thinking about one going broody, because I just started raising chicks last spring. BUT... Its not the same hen that had been sitting there almost all day yesterday. Lol

Dragonlady posted in her sig line she would have some available this year. Her Sunshine Girls are just stunning and huge. You would do better with just a trio from Dragonlady than 25 from somewhere else.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/120608/thedragonlady . She has over 1/2 century in purebred poultry.

It's not hard at all to get poultry shipped to you. I had my foundation trio shipped in from Montana. Just get a www.boxesforbirds.com box, lay and extra layer of cardboard on the bottom of the box so if the birds poo it doesn't stain the box itself. Get some Grogel Plus and put it in the box. I used the new triple bird box they have. There's a 3-way divider they have that separates it into 3 triangles. Great for large fowl birds. Plenty of room. And the box is about 3 ft. long. No way for it to get misplaced in transit. I got my birds USPS Express Overnight and 3 hours early!! The boxes are reusable too. BFB sizes their boxes for pigeons so the 3 bird large fowl bird is listed as a 16 pigeon box. Just tell them what you want and they will get you all set. Expect to pay 75.-90. for shipping. Well worth it for quality birds.

This is a good thing she is only offering started birds. This is very common among top breeders.

Last month we went to the Fort Worth Stock Show. The Buff Cockerels that we took are the same age, nine months. The one that I thought would have the best chance to win, took second to his brother cockerel. The first attached picture is the Judges pick and second picture was my pick. What do you think?

They were right. The wing carriage, the top outline and tail angle is better on the first. I like the color on the bottom one though. I am not a judge just a small flock owner but that's my 2 cents.

Do you have an APA Standard ? The judge picked the Buff with the best type, and the better wings. His depth and eveness of color is better also. The second bird's tail set is way too high, and from this angle, he looks to have a much larger comb.

Hi there not sure if this is the right place to post, but my 15 strong orpington flock was DEVESTATED by a dog last week! :( I lost 9 birds in total! Needless to say it won't happen again, so sad :( But I am left with my silver laced roo a gold laced bantam and 2 buff hens. What would the colour combo be of any chicks from the silver laced over the buff? Many thanks for any input :)
