*Buff Orpington Thread!*

That is what I thought... I purchased them as a sexed trio. So, to say I'm a little disappointed would be fair, but they were relatively young when I bought them. So, I can't be to upset with the seller. However, I will have some delicious chicken dinners.

The last one might be confusing because I'm not 100% sure I see pointy saddles on it. I don't necessarily look at that extra long tail feather because pullets of that age sometimes have that and molt it out and the comb on that one is not as large as the others, but the body is leaner than I think you'd see on a pullet of that age. BUT, even hatchery pullets of this breed rarely get huge red combs like that at this age, if you are correct on the ages. I have one 19 week old hatchery Buff Orp pullet who is very lean, but her comb is teensy and she has no shiny gold feathers like your birds. I'm used to breeder quality birds and I'm disappointed in her size and shape, of course, but at least I know she's a pullet and will lay eggs. I don't think you'll be getting eggs from these, LOL.

Unfortunately, the last one is the only one of the three that has actually figured out that he is the same size as my roo and challenged him a bit. The only one I was unsure of was the 2nd one. None have crowed for me, but as my 6 y.o. would say, the only thing they are going to lay is giant poops.

BTW, I love your screen name. I just told someone the other day when speaking of someone involved in a family situation that who did they think they were fooling? I didn't just fall off the turnip truck.

Im planning on getting BO's sometime soon. I've read only good things about them, hopefully they are broody.

Depends mostly on where you get them. You'll have a better chance of them being broody if you avoid most hatchery stock. That's not to say hatchery Orps will never brood, but they tend not to be as broody as the breed is supposedly known for, generally.

Here is my BO she isn't a year old yet and became broody. She hatched 4 out of 6 eggs. She's from a hatchery and I just love her and the 4 other BO's that I have!

Wonderful! Broodies are great....until you have 16-20 of them and they repeat themselves, LOL! Ack! My first two Buff Orps were hatchery girls, though unfortunately, one died the way most all my hatchery hens did, from internal laying/egg yolk peritonitis. Only one of them ever went broody and coincidentally, she lived the longest of my original hatchery girls. My breeder quality Buff Orp hen is about 7 years old and has raised probably six batches of chicks in her lifetime, though her laying days are now over.

Well I wasn't expecting it to be so soon, but I found Bella's MOTHER with another chick today!! Didn't even know she had the chick until I heard her calling it out for food. I threw her a bit of corn infront of her nest like I always do and then I heard someone doing the food call. I looked at George thinking it was him because he was the only one with one bowl of food to himself. He then lifted his head up and it carried on, so I knew it wasn't him. Opened her shed and saw it was her. I didn't know that the chick was on it's way out from under her. It was in her front feathers and I started lifting the front of her up squishing it in the process (whoops) and then it dropped down. It must have had a pretty good hatch considering I couldn't even hear it pecking inside yesterday. Here they are having some chick crum. Going up tonight to move her into a secure shed just incase the rats get it through the night.
