*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Mt Healthy is a hatchery, apparently the one that is supplying most of the Tractor Supply Company outlets this year. I wouldn't know any hatchery to recommend for Orpingtons. There are quite a few breeders of quality Orpingtons here on BYC-I used to be breed blue, black and splash but only have one older blue hen and two Buff hens, no Orp rooster at this point in time. Just be sure to ask if they have ever had contagious disease in their flocks. If they say something like they treat "the usual crud" from time to time, run for the hills.

I'm not in the loop on who has is breeding Orps right now, but if you put a Want to Buy ad in our classifieds, you should find someone in your local area.

Can you please tell me what Mt. Healthy means? Where do you recommend getting Orpingtons from?
ironically...Mt. Healthy is also the hatchery that had the salmonella outbreak this year.

If you want good, true to type chickens of any breed the best way t find them is through the APA and Breed clubs.
For Orpingtons, that would be the U.O.C. or United Orpington Club.
The UOC has some great members and the president , Don Chandler is on BYC from time to time.

Where did you get your Lavender Orp?

Any ideas if this is a hen or rooster? We are newbies and aren't quite sure yet.

Definitely a young Cockerel.
You see from his head to his "shoulders' those feathers that are a little skinnier and pointy, those are his hackles, hens hackles do not look like that...and then on his back, just before the tail there are some longer thinner feathers that seem to be growing "out' of the others and kind of curling down the side...those would be saddles only cocks get those. finally the tail feathers are long and curling, coming out at a steeper angle....another boy thing.

We know that at least one is crowing but we can't catch them in the act to know for sure.
