*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Has anyone ever lost a buff orpington to a hawk? They are so big.

No. But...I don't free range so...

But I have read that they are so "fluffy" that a lot of times the hawk only get feathers, but not sure if that's true.
The BO's are fairly heavy (Roos even heavier), but one of those large Red Tailed Hawks that lives on my property could probably carry off one of my girls. I know they would like to try. They occasionally come and sit in a tree and watch for a while and sometimes do a fly by around the run.

Coopers Hawk (aka Chicken Hawk) are a lot smaller but so aggressive they will take on LF. I went to check on my birds one day and there was a Coopers Hawk sitting on the shed right beside their run. I'm sure he was trying to figure out how to get inside. I accidentally caught a Coopers once in a live pigeon trap on a grain silo. He had managed to squeeze through the one way door and kill the the trapped pigeon inside. A local research scientist came and removed the hawk and tagged and released him. A few days later I caught the same hawk in the same trap. They are so aggressive its a good thing they are small.

Daisy is a bit curious!!

I have seen Cooper's Hawks in other areas of the county, but never one on my property. Wonder if it because of the Red Tails being here. They have always nested on my property (even when I was a little girl). They patrol my field and the neighboring orchards (and now my chickens

). They are pretty and I like to watch them.
Funny thing is the chickens don't pay much attention to the Hawks, but I also have Pileated Woodpeckers, the chickens make a ruckus when one of them comes along - go figure

A friend of mine lost a chocolate orpington (may have been a black orp) to a hawk. She has an acre fenced in and landscaped for her beautiful flock but once she had to let her rooster go,the preditors moved in. Hot wire stopped the foxes, but the hawks snatch up anyone too slow to run for cover.

Yikes! But what did a rooster do to stop them from being eaten?
