Hi everyone! I am going In 3 days to pick up my first ever chicks!!! I originally was going to get 6 BO after research on this site. Then I was reading about them being frequently broody so I decided to add some Plymouth Barred Rocks in place of a few BO. Do you think they will get along? I am just scared to do the wrong thing

Could someone let me know about this "broody" stuff! After reading this thread I want to go back to all BO's again! Lol!

Orpingtons are very sociable..you wont have any problems with them and other birds

(As far as they are concerned)

Some breeders breed for broodiness, others try to breed it out, so I think it will largely depend on the individual chicken.

Thanks so much. I have read they can be picked on from other breed since they're so gentle and I didn't want that!

I was worried about that too when I added a couple different breeds this spring, so far no one in particular gets picked on. Surprisingly, my buff Ari (the one that begs to be held and will just stand at your feet until you pick her up) I thought wow she's so gentle and sweet, she will for sure get picked on! But actually SHE tends to be the sassy one, even toward my Wellies! Overall they are a great mixed flock, without much unsavory behavior. I was so concerned about that, but so far it's worked itself out and no one chicken or breed seems to be overly sassy. They are 14 weeks old, so we'll see? And maybe having the older adult birds makes a difference idk

I'm so glad to hear that. I think I'm just going to go with my plan of getting BO and a couple of BR and just hope for the best. I'm the type of person who does sooooo much research that I second guess every decision. I guess I'll never know til I try. Thanks everyone for the great advice! I'll post pics later!:D

I hear ya! I'm that same way too ;) Yep just go for it because what works for one person may not for the next and vice versa. Just pull the trigger and deal with what comes :D And have fun!
