*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Mine have black/brown dots/spots in their tails and/or wings as well.

Found a couple of links. Looks like it is called "peppering".

Some of mine would have some black speckles in their tails. During the fall moult they would usually lose them and grow back normal buff feathers. If you have hatchery stock (as I do) I think that's where that comes from.

Mine are hatchery stock, so I just assumed they would have some peppering or smut. I will have to take a closer look at my rooster, his tail feathers are starting to come back in and see if the peppering is gone. For me, I don't really care if they have it or not since I don't show them, they are more for eggs and "Chicken TV" than anything else.

Thanks so much for posting! Hoping in spring then that Willows feathers won't have the peppering so she can be ready to roll for county fairs in June and July! She did come from a hatchery or more a broker but so did our other pullet who didn't have the pepper feathers. BUT they are totally different looking birds, I think they can from different suppliers.

Those are what mine are for too. Although they are older now and aren't laying very well. I can't bear to cull em :/

Hopefully they'll lose the peppering then. They probably will

Hi all, I have 3 BO hens that are approximately 6 months old and they are housed in a coop with female ducks. The only problem is that since my ducks started laying eggs first, my BOs are now laying in the ducks nest and not the roost boxes we built for them. Turns out my husband isn't able to tolerate the richer duck eggs and with them all laying together I am having a heck of a time telling the difference between a BO egg, Khaki Campbell and a pekin egg.
How do I get my BOs to lay in the roost box?? I've tried fake eggs but they show no interest. Has anyone experienced this before? I would appreciate any advice you can give. Thank you!

Mine would usually lose their peppering after a molt. I don't think I have any right now with peppering, but I know for sure some used to so I guess they lost it.

Ahh. Good to know. I see you are from Virginia, howdy neighbor!

Sounds like you've got quite the dilemma on your hands! Try posting in the ''chicken behaviors and egg laying'' page as well.

Hi @TanyaLlama

As @CuzChickens suggested you may want to try posting in the ''chicken behaviors and egg laying'' page as well.

Can you post some photos of your coop setup? You have nesting boxes and roost boxes? I'm having a hard time visualizing this.
Normally all fowl cooped together will want to lay in the same boxes, so you may have a hard time getting them to lay in a different place.

Would also love to see your BO's and ducks!
