One of my little dinosaurs found a dead mouse in the garden. As soon as the other hen found out she spent a good 4-5 minutes running after her to grab a piece of it. Was the funniest thing I ever saw them do

Can't wait till next week. My flock of 2 will be growing to 4. A Sussex and a black rock joining us.
How cute!!

Hello! I just bought a farm and of course immediately got some chicks. I have 15 total, 3 of which are Buff Orpingtons. Here they are with one of the Golden Laced Wyandottes. The Buffs are named Kara, Cassidy, and Brooke, though I don't know which is which yet since I can't tell them apart. I have ordered some chick leg bands to help me out. The Wyandotte in the picture is Eleanor, and I only know which one she is because she is the friendliest of all the chicks so far :)

How fun! Congrats on new chicks spend lots of time with them, they'll be sweeter that way when they're older

I try to spend at least an hour a day sitting in the brooder with all of the chicks. It took Eleanor a few days to really get cuddly, and the Orpingtons seem to like to climb on me now, we will have to see how the rest turn out...I have been giving them all some Pak Choy each day (I am a horticulture teacher so they will be getting lots of garden scraps in the future) which they LOVE, so hopefully they associate me with good things. Unfortunately the 9 youngest chicks arrived with somewhat crusty booties, so after washing and anointing them, they haven't liked me as much as the older chicks, but hopefully they will come around. I got Brahmas and Orpingtons specifically because they are supposed to be very friendly. Well that and my family breeds Gypsy Vanners, so I couldn't resist the huge fluffy footed Brahmas. Also some of my students have seen the meme of that giant Light Brahma, so it makes them more interested in my chicks.

Big Bertha 7 weeks old

Big Bertha is growing like a weed!

Quote: You're doing good! We all raise chickens differently, some don't give chicks fruits/veggies until they are several weeks old, others (like me) start putting a piece of fruit or veggies in the brooder for them to investigate. I feel, the sooner the better, but that's a personal preference. I have some chicks that are about 27days old and they go nuts to get some chopped grapes (which were introduced to when they were about 3days old), hanging broccoli, cucumber, etc. I let them have a small amount of whatever I'm giving my adults, this way they are used to what I feed.

Spending time with them helps. Some will become aloof and not want to be touched at all, some will want to be "just near you", while others want to be cuddled, I've found that each has a unique personality. They are so much fun, good luck with your babies!

I am new to chickens. We inherited 5 hens with our house (we moved in a year ago), and decided we really enjoy them. We got 6 day old "pullets" on Feb 24. 2 of them are buff orpingtons. Can someone more experienced with these guys tell me if this one is a pullet or cockerel??
