Here's some of my babies. The bigger ones are about 5 weeks old here. The blue thing they are standing next to is 9 inches tall. The one on the right is blocky and chunky, wide head. I call him Rock.

Just got two Buff Orp pullets (we hope) that are two months old. They are doing great! Georgina is definitely the boss, and Henrietta is more tame. Very nice so far.

Our orp is 5 1/2 weeks old. Does this look like a roo or a pullet? It's behavior has been roo-like since 2 weeks but it may just be bossy. Compared to its sussex flock mates its feet and legs are huge but that may just be a breed difference? Are they normally this rosy in the face at 5 weeks? No tell-tale feathers yet.

Oi! I was afraid of that! At least I probably won the bet with my husband!

He didn't believe I could have such bad luck to reach in a group of 50 pullets and pull out a roo. I hope I didn't waste my Lottery karma on a chicken!

I have 2 BOs and so far I am disappointed.

With the original 2 I started out with, one was very sweet at first and the second ended up being a boy. So we exchanged the boy for what I'm thinking might be another boy. Well my girl is now 2 weeks and is a big bully to my Cochins and austrolorp. If they come to fast at her or try to fly randomly she will immediately get an attitude and reenforce to the that she is in charge. She is a little bigger than the rest but she seems to be the most flighty and aggressive. Well she's kind of bi polar, I'm not sure what to think of her because sometimes I can hold her and she will just lay down as if she's saying "ok yes you can pet me now" but other times ill go to get her and she'll get in defense mode. Did anyone else have their buff start out this way but eventually turned out to be sweet?
I'm upset my 2nd "female" wants nothing to do with me. And I haven't been able to get attached to her/him. I'm debating if I should exchange her and get another cochin. But I'm also starting to not like my girl buff

I was so excited when I found someone who breed these, but now they are slowly loosing cool points

I'm not meaning to knock the breed, but I've come here to see if anyone else had these problems or if I'm just over reacting

I just don't want to get attached to them if they are going to turn out mean anyways. Or maybe this is just a phase??

I am new to orps too so I am just going off of other posts - not sure if the "wing test" applies to all orps. Maybe someone with breed experience can chime in if the wing development is a good indicator?
We have one that was suppose to be a pullet but behaved like a roo and had those long pointed wings at 2 weeks (but no tail). Bossy as all get-out from day 1. Looks like our suspicions were right as you can see from my post above. You may need to flip-flop your boy/girl labels but wait and see.

Total Buff Orpington N00b here. I'd like some advice, and you can be honest... I can take it!

I'm looking for a mellow, calm, friendly breed of chicken. By friendly, I mean that I would like to occasionally be able to hold/pet the hen briefly, once in a while, and am looking for a breed who relates happily to humans and handling. I am open to raising the hen from chickhood, if you think that may best help the hen learn comfort and love while being occasionally gently handled.

Our flock is tiny, (3 hens, 1 ancient mini-roo) peaceful, and they get to free-range in safety in our large, fenced backyard. So, we really want a mellow, calm, easygoing breed to keep a peaceful vibe going. And yes, I'd like an occasional outdoor lap pet to spoil now and again.

Is this a suitable breed for our situation? I'm wishing to get sexed chicks to avoid roos, so am considering hatchery stock.
Are some hatcheries stock more friendly/calm/handle-able than others?
