Can anybody tell me if this is normal? this is the same 2 buff orpington chicks. They are 12 weeks old and sometimes they are very red and sometimes very pale. Can change the same day? Is this caused by stress? they are on the bottom of the pecking order.

It sounds to me like heat variations. Does the heat change a lot in your area i.e sudden rain or cloud cover on hot days. A chickens comb is kind of like a heat regulator. It is bright red when the temperature is just right and can get paler and smaller during cold (to prevent frost bite) and when it is very hot to reduce the surface area that can over heat and get sun burnt (a chickens comb is very simular to its skin but unlike most of its skin it is unprotected, you often see naked necks with very red neck skin for the same reason as a chickens comb is red). Since your chickens are not fully grown yet their combs are not big enough to shrivel up so they would just get paler. Pale combs are also common for hens that don't get enough sun light like hens kept in barns or runs that are covered with dark material. The last possibility is the most serious which is a heart condition, the comb would usually go completely purple in this case though because of a lack of blood going t the comb (like if a person tied an elastic band around their finger and left it there for a long time the skin does purple) I wouldn't think this is the case because they are still very young and heart problems are usually only in very old or seriously over weight hens.

Thanks, it does seem to fluctuate with the heat. We have had a lot of hot weather and frequent and quick rain storms. Thanks so much for the information!
