*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I have a 1/2 eng.blue orp that has an attitude but all the others for me at least have been gentle giants. She is still pretty but really is hard on some of my other hens.

Have you seen my photos yet ? You have to scroll down the profile page. The Buffs and Blacks seem to be a bit more calm and friendly to me. I may be wrong about this as I've not been involved with too many of the other colors. My Buffs are known for being gentle and friendly.My cockbirds are all very gentle, though they are huge. Buffs that have been properly maintained as pure lines are derived from different lines than the other colors are. Strange but true. What also is true though, is that we probably have none that were so properly preserved. Fact is, that breeder birds are almost always more friendly and nice than anything you'll get from a hatchery. Why? Because reputable breeders take this into consideration. Most will NOT breed a bird that is aggressive to people no matter how wonderful they look. And hatcheries frankly couldn't care less how they look or how they act.

I've had a couple breeder blacks that were every bit as friendly and nice as most of the buffs I've had. Then again I have buffs that are superior in that regard to anything I've had before. But the are just better anyway.

So how do I find some SOPs. My birds are small compared to some of the other chickens in my area. One still lays small eggs and the others lay anywhere from medium to large and once in a while maybe a jumbo. I looked at the American Poultry Assoc. but could not find anything on the sight about purchasing SOPs. Don't know if it was just my ignorance regarding computer navigating or what.

Interesting observation regarding my small flock. Since the rooster got killed when I go out they all come running to me (that's not the interesting part) but they do the breeding squat especially if I talk to them. Seems odd to me. They have always come running when I go out there and they follow me pretty much everywhere but this new behavior is something I've never seen in chickens.

congratulations, you are the new rooster. Squatting isn't just sexual. It's also a submissive thing, sort of saying that they trust you to keep them safe.
