*Buff Orpington Thread!*

The brown and buff is pics of the one cross. The marans are super easy to sex. At 2-3 weeks the boys start growing combs. I think the buff cross resembles the pullet in the last pic.

Question.
This has probably been discussed at length, but I am not adept at searches. Tried and did not come up with anything that answers my questions.

I expect (hope) to have one or more of my BO get broody at some point this spring. I want her (them) to raise a batch of chicks for me. They have been laying for a couple months now.

Can I:

1) get day old chicks and place under her (at night) shortly after she gets broody and expect her to take them as her own and raise them up? (preffered by me)

or, is a better option

2) obtain fertile eggs and let her hatch them out.

I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure both would work! @Sally Sunshine

Do buff orpington hens commonly have spurs? I adopted a group of chickens recently and noticed that the buff orpington has one spur about an inch long on her left leg. Just wondering if this is breed typical! Thank you.

How old is she? Can anyone tell.

I have no idea how old she is. Do you have a picture of her face?
As far as spurs go, I believe any chicken can develop spurs. If she is the one that has spurs, I would say she is more than likely over 12 months old ~ maybe older. How did you come by adopting your chickens, what kind do you have?

Here is her face :)

I just got some chickens off of CL. the first four were a dominique, BR, RIR, and black SL. Then I got the BO, two EE's, two ameraucanas, and a black australorp (although I think she might be a minorca or some other chicken with white earlobes) together.

Aww...she's pretty! I would guess maybe about 18mos. or so. Is she laying?

No, no one is laying. I am not sure if it is due to the winter or not.

Did they give any indication of how old they might be?Now that I look at her wattles, she may actually be a younger pullet. My two BO girls are 24wks. and one just started laying, but their combs are smaller that yours, but the wattles on the one that just started is about the same size. I'm also looking at the BR in the background and she looks about the size of mine that started laying as well. Pretty girls. I'm sure you are enjoying them.
If they are "first year" then hopefully you will start to get eggs.
