*Buff Orpington Thread!*

I love Buff Orpingtons!! They are such a kind and gentle breed. And have great egg production too. Although I was so attached to my Buff it was more like a pet then poultry!

I notice that our Buff O hens are laying eggs that are on the smallish size of 'large' compared to our Welsummer hens whose eggs are extra large in size. They are a year old this month.

Will their egg size increase after their first molt this summer?

I had one that would sit on my shoulder and she was the sweetest little thing. Unfortunately we had a hawk and she fault off it and gave her buddies enough time to run and his but she did end up dying- she laid
Under her favorite bush and died there :( ever since then I've been trying to find some orpingtons ( buff and other colors) to show with b/c I'm a 4-her in Pa. Does anyone know a breeder

Ditto!

For some reason all of our roosters prefer the Buff girls. Must be something about those bodacious fluffy bums that drives them wild. I've been busily sewing hen aprons for ours and the hens are strutting around like models on the runway.

What's strange is that we have Welsummer hens as well as the Buff O's and the roosters still go for the Buffs. Of course the Buffs don't beat up the boys the way the Wellies do if they push their attentions too far.

One of our Buff hens just presented us with 8 adorable chicks:

Here she is with one of her first hatched chicks peeping out from under her wing. Her brood of Buff O and Buff O/Welsummer cross chicks are now two weeks old.

What a loving little momma she is.

I can hardly wait for another one to go broody so I can shove some Black and Lavender O eggs under her. I really have come to love the Orpington breed of chickens.
This is adorable!

Thanks Wyorp Rock.

I can't praise this little lady enough. She first went broody in December, 2 weeks before Christmas at the tender age of 9 months. Not a good time with winter coming in and the holidays right around the corner. I used a broody buster cage on her and she broke in 3 days only for the urge to hit again the middle of February. I decided that I didn't have the heart to stick her back in that cage so I let her set on 7 eggs. The other hens snuck behind my back and added a few more to her cause. We wound up with 8 chicks in all, all healthy and thriving. Aggie (short for Aguilla. When she was a baby she used to sit on top of their waterer and survey the brooder below her like an eagle sitting in a treetop) is being a fantastic mom to them. This is my first experience with Buff O's and I can't say anything bad about them as either layers or as brood hens.

I love my BO girl! Her right leg is a bit off, so she has a very cute and super funny run/waddle. No matter how bad of a day I'm having, she can always make me smile when she comes running! I have a mixed flock of 5 (BO,EE,SS,SF,WS) and love the variety and different personalities of each one. I will always have a BO in my flock!

I plan to pick up 4 little BO chicks on 24 March! This is my first flock, and BOs sounded perfect for a small yard with close neighbors. I need quiet, friendly girls. I hope my grandson likes them. I have to train my 2 German Shepherds that they aren't prey, but they won't be free-ranging once they're in their coop and run. Just joined BYC today! Thanks BYC for the all the information and support!
