We are picking out 2 chicks from a breeder next weekend. Thoughts on what we should look for?

Well I am very new to this but from my research, you can't go wrong with buff orpingtons. They are sweet and docil. Mine already run to me when they see me and this is just our second day together. Good luck!

If your getting sexed chicks go for the bigger ones that are more active. Wach for any that have poop on their bottoms or seem shy. If ones just laying around or seems smaller stick away from those. Good luck.

Here is Batman. He is a Barred Rock on top of either a buff or cuckoo maran. I am leaning more towards buff. Thoughts? How would I know or do I have to wait till he is full grown. We can't keep him since our town is a no rooster town.

I think if he were on the Buff he'd have more yellow bleeding, that bit under his chin is probably still baby feathers. I vote BR x Cuckoo Marans.

Awww....We got our 4 BO in early April. They grow so fast! They are the sweetest, funniest ladies! FYI---they are mad for grapes! They will actually chase us and cry and whine when we come out with "the bowl"!!!

"Whine and Cry" yes, the BO's do that more than the others.

When I first started researching what breeds I wanted to start with I knew I wanted BO's for sure. Reviews said "sweet, QUIET, friendly, docile, etc., etc., "

HAhahahaha! Delightful for sure, quiet? not so much - atleast for one of my BO's she is the chattiest little thing, a bit runty even at almost a year, but boy do you know she alive, she greet you will a sound like no one else, bloomers bouncing as she trots.
She's the cheerleader, the busy body and everything else. Not top girl, but everyone seems to get along with her very well. She's the one that instigates a cluckfest, of course Charlie joins in and she keeps him going. These festivals can last over 30minutes until everyone is hoarse, it's hilarious. This is usually the only time I really get to hear the Wyandottes do a
"cluckcluckcluck-PIP-cluckcluckcluck-PIP" each breed has a totally different voice--amazing.

Has anyone crossbred different colors of orps? I have a white roo and buff hen that are super sweet and would love some babies from them. Just wondering what colors to expect; also considering crossing white orp with barred rock.

Well, when I say whine and cry, it IS so cute---they are almost like a dog begging. They look up at us and won't stop until we give them the grapes! They sometimes even peck us a little and one jumped up on the arm of the lawn chair hubby was sitting in with the bowl when a grape was not forthcoming fast enough! It is truly HILARIOUS, but they are so sweet and so good, and they do get their grapes every day, ha ha!

I think pullet. At 6 months their would be saddle feathers which I'm not seeing.

They do beg, like they are just poor starved, pitiful things.

Lucy makes a plaintive honking sound. At 6pm my DH takes a little treat out for them. It has to be 6pm ON.THE.DOT.

He's experimented, waiting a few minutes after, the ruckus is sooo funny, the honks get LOUDER and FASTER, I swear she stomps her feet too.
