Just 2 days after asking about broody hens!! Yippie!! She's been sleeping on the eggs all day and even pecked me when I reached in! I hope she stays, this will be a first for us!
This is her own little broody house, I already moved her to it because the other hens were trying to jump in the nest. She didn't mind, I just picked up the whole box to more her.

That's great! Nice little broody house too!

I was hoping I might have someone go broody, but so far the only thing that seems to want to desperately nest is my poor rooster

He keeps trying to entice the girls to sit on the nest he made in the back of the coop - he sits, clucks and puts bedding on his back - the girls just STARE at him

I have chicks coming the first week of April, so would love to see if I could get a broody girl to take them. Oh well - will be using the "Mama Heating Pad" method - we shall see how well I do with that

My BLRW ROO has been getting in the nest too. Confused me at first until I did a little research. He is such a sweet husband!

Apparently what I thought was broody was illness!! What the heck!! I spent all day with them yesterday and she was fine, this morning I found her broody!! She even pecked me!! She was alive before I left, was gone a few hours and came home to her dead!!!

I just had one of my BOs die similarly. She was fine in am, laid an egg, at bedtime she was asleep by the coop ramp in run. I picked up and put her in coop. She stumbled a bit then walked inside and laid down. I found her dead the next morning. No idea what happened to her. This was last week.

Unfortunately chickens occasionally just drop dead from no apparent cause. I suspect heart attacks.

Do you know if it's more often with hatchery chickens? Does good breeding help limit this?

It seems to be totally random. I've had breeder birds and hatchery birds just go. I think it's a chicken thing. Most of mine just die as opposed to looking sick before. Sometimes they act off the day before, but most time they look perfectly fine than I find them dead in the morning. My average life expectancy is about 4-6 years with a few living longer. My oldest birds currently are two hatchery buff Orpington hens who are 9 this year.
