Buff Orps are the yellow labs of the chicken world. You'll love it. Glad your son has a new buddy.

Thanks Bec, I am happy to see the comb development on your Emily! I was beginning to wonder if it was going to get decent sized on my Emily.
Wooden_pony, so glad your son is consoled, I am sorry for your first loss. I know how tough it can be with kids and animals. It is worth it though for them to know first hand what other life forms are like.

She's about a week old. Here's a picture of mine at 9 days and again today at 15 days old, They don't even look like the same birds. They are twice the size they are in first picture, a lot of the fluff has been replaced with feathers and their feet are huge.

The Buff-O's I've had were good all arounders. Nice birds and nice to be around, they have been popular for decades. you cant go wrong with them.

They are bigger, though, than your A-caunas, so be ready for that. The cocks grow to impressive, statuesque proportions.

I just love my Buffy, But let me tell you this, Once she went broody and I even let her hatch a chick, she was broody most of the summer. I did not let her have any more eggs, and it still took a good two months for her to get it to get out of it completely. But I just love her, and when my husband was saying, "when is she going to lay some more egg?". I just said, whenever she feels like it, we have plenty. so I am just going to leave her alone for now.
