Thanks Freebie for letting me know about the possiability of being broody.

I am not worried about it as I have 3 Americunans, 1 Rhode Island Red, and one Bared Rock. PLUS, my Daughter bought two Standard Blue Cochins, they can get broody as well.

How funny that some of you have mentioned them being heavier. I noticed tonight that "Butter" is heavier then her three broodermates. I am glad to know that she will be bulkier then the others as I thought I was going crazy

I just love my buff's. They are good sized birds and my girls have really puffy butts. When they were small, they looked like they were wearing little ruffled panties but now they are big girls, it looks more like puffy hoop skirts!!! Your son is going to love that. Can't attest to laying ability yet, we are just starting but they stay busy eating bugs in my yard whenever they are out.

Zen,
If your DH thought catching the chicken indoors was bad, wait until he decides to take a nap in that hammock and wakes up with new sleeping companions.

Have your camera ready. I want to see the pics.

HI ,
I have two buffs, two barred rocks, ages 14 weeks the rocks are smarter than the buffs, one buff is freindly and one is not! Handled as a chick just like the others, in fact she was the hardest to handle. She will not come when called, looks at me like I am darth vader if I am near the coop door. Refusing to go in until I move way back.
wil not feed from my hand, or plate.

She is flying! over the run gate when she wants out.
So I like the barreds better, miss loner/stupid girl better lay eggs!My other buff, miss big buff is more like the barreds, just not as smart.
So the barreds chase me around, mildly complain if I pick them up, all the girls are ganging up on the dogs, cats, and jays at the feeders, and really want in the kitchen.
I sure wish I had one of those pretty barreds that are white with the black collar, I saw one at the state fair.

Oh, at the fair my Momand I were freaked at how big the buffs can get, hope ours stop growing at about 18 weeks. I saw some roos the size of my 14 inch sheltie.

Nice to hear some are laying at 20 weeks,

Buffs are indeed a very good bird. I think their only one flaw is they will go broody on you easily. I swear they would try to hatch a rock if you let them. In one respect they make good foster broodies. If you wanted a good layer and don't want to bother with breaking a broody, I would go with the barred rocks.
