buff orpingtons

2 of mine went broody on me- one spends most of her day parked in the nest box, and growls and fluffs out all over when I make her get out to eat. She's also the only one of the 3 laying a single (still small) egg at@ 10 months of age. I think it may be too hot here for them right now… 2 others from the same batch died of apparent cancer this past few weeks, but these seem just less-than-bright, not really sick at this time. I was hoping for friendly, prolific egg layers, but… how do you cut the broody out of their behavior? Or is it inbred?

Hey there! Check out this chicken breed chart. I have Buffs and didnt know what kind of layers they were (but that would have been a good thing to know first). My concerns was merely to have a cold hardy, friendly bird. According to this website, they are mid-range layers AND lay thru the cold, darker months too!

Have fun...

mine layed all winter in grey rainy oregon,,,, hooked up a 100 watt daylight spectrum light in the coop over the roost bar, just a bunch of sunlight, and they were very happy.

my BO is a great member of the flock. she was about average to start laying (6 mos). she's a little more nosy than the others. friendly and not broody.
