Buff Orpingtons

What do you mean by hardier? What problems are you having with them? I have 5 in a flock of 30 and don't have any problem with them.

We don't endure any 'extreme' situations, but so far the ONE BO we have is PERFECT...she is hardy, happy, friendly, etc etc etc...she's just the ideal chicken IMHO

Buff Orpingtons are my favourite breed. They are reliable egg layers, are quiet, have agreeable personalities, are pretty and weather harsh Canadian winters without any problem.

I think Buffs are quite a strong breed, I have 5 out of a flock of 30ish and all are doing great, but I had 5 Australorps, that have all died... from the same purhcase....

I put it down to a bad batch?

Mine haven't read that far in the book, yet. Our roo crows every 45-60 minutes. The hens cluck and honk off-and-on all day. And at least once a day, a handful of them will do the buck-buck-bugawk! call back and forth for ten minutes or so.

Well, not quite sure what happened . . . alive and happy one day . . . dead the next. They were 3 days old when we got them - well, the first one, then got another and then when that one passed we got another . . . . and to go back - the very first one we got about a year ago . . . . did well until about 20 weeks and then one day could walk (I am pretty sure out barred rock got too rough with her). I was just wondering if they were more fragile I guess is what I shoud've said.

Thanks for the input . . . maybe we just got a bad batch!

I have 25 BO's - 5 roos and 20 pullets that are 18 weeks (patiently waiting for those eggs!) and 3 silkies. They all get along great even now when the boys are discovering the girls. There's some noise when the boys attempt to do what roosters do, but most of it comes from the girls. This is our first time raising chickens, and so far there have been no problems

and no health issues.
The only "complaint" is Cookie, our silkie hen, would rather be broody than not. Our chickens free range all day with feed available in the open coops, and everyone is growing nicely, plus we have all sorts of "cheep" entertainment!

Mine seems to be doing as well as my RIR and my Golden Sex Link in 100+ degree heat and it's been that hot here for about 3 months, I think. I'm thinking that there's something else afoot, maybe like what you thought about they're being from a bad batch.
