Buff Silkie Thread!

#1: type
#2: type
#3: type

George's method for determining whether a bird wa worth getting or keeping depended upon the number of faults (including DQs). 1 is okay, 2 is tolerable, 3 is too many.

One of his sayings is "build the house first, then paint it." That is why I say type, type type.

Once you have type, breed select against the faults that are hardest to correct. THere is no perfect bird, and if you cull heavily to get rid of a single fault, chances are you will have also culled out some very good birds. Better to gradually get better and better in all areas. Almost any fault can be forgiven if there is enough great about the bird in other areas.

does anyone have a pic of what you would consider a good buff and one you wouldn't that you could show us ? I'm not wanting to start working with buff silkies , but am always wanting to learn when it comes to silkies . I do have a few here on my farm from catdance and shagbark and CJs . I keep them just as pets .

I agree with Sonoran- type is first- and I include wings in type. Bad wings can make a great body look bad- just throws the eyes off. The rest is a balancing act- one bird may have a key piece of the puzzle and another bird may have a different 'thing' that is really outstanding.

Remember- there is no such thing as a perfect bird.
