Buff Silkie Thread!

Sundown love your buffs do you keep lighter or darker roos to use...we have been using a rooster who has a really thick soft coat..he is the blue kind with some very lite blue in his tail and he has the lighter comb ...he produced some outstanding birds in his first year...big boys with tons of foot feathering.. girls with fairly even color and soft fur....one of these days i will have to add one of your girls to the flock before he gets old....i have one son of his who has a teensie comb which is dark and he is a deeper shade..it amazes me how you can such a range of buff shades....like i said love your stuff very nice...Chris

Here is my little buff Silkie Andorian "Andy" for short. He has aqua skin, a single comb, no beard, just a little mohawk and already trying to crow. He is definately not as pretty as the other silkies on here, but he has such personality and only at 8 weeks old.

Is buff the most difficult (or one of the most difficult) colors of Silkie to breed, for show purposes, etc.? Just curious.

I've heard that said, and I have to say it does not match my experiences. I think a lot has to do with the quality of your foundation stock. I find breeding blacks to be one of my more challenging efforts--primarily keeping them from sunburning their feathers. I get a much higher percentage of quality partridge than of blacks or blues. When I was breeding buffs, I could make the same statement, more of better quality in buff than with blacks or blues. And it has had to do with body colour, not hackle colour, which is not usually a problem.
