Buffalo Gnats are back *UPDATE*

Hmm..interesting...buffalo gnats are in the black fly family. But with a hump, hence the term buffalo gnats. Idk, what they could be.. sorry..

bump for good information, gnats are out in full swing where i live on the river in mississippi right now. 4 of my 12 chickens have scratched out their neck feathers, everyone is shaking heads non stop and staying inside the coop, will not come out at all. gnats are making them miserable. Im headed to wal mart right now to buy 2 box fans, vanilla extract, and coconut oil to mix it with, i also hung vanilla car air fresheners up everywhere yesterday, i may have noticed a slight difference. but i think the fan is going to be the key.

Permethrin is the key. Almost all feed stores have it. These other things are good enough for short periods of time but they Kill birds. I lost 42 and one was diagnosed by the LSU disease and diagnostic center.

How to apply permethrin? Spray the run and coop ceiling and walls and floor? How long before the chickens can be around it.

Yes sir there are dozens of products, mostly it mixes with water in a pump sprayer and i sprayed all of my yard, the pasture behind it and the neighboring places in addition to my coop and birds. It is safe for the birds to be on the treated areas as soon as its thoroughly dry.

Thank you! So you say you sprayed the birds directly also? I wonder if wal mart carries this as my closest feed store is an hour away. How long is it effective for ?

Yes most types you can spray directly on the birds. I find its only effective until the next rain  i feel your pain i am in South LA and spraying everytime it rains means ive sprayed 8 tines in a month. Also whenever the grass is cut it should be reapplied. Your very welcome im so glad to help. Please dont wait, those flipn gnats are Deadly to livestock.

Could you allow your chickens to free range during the day until treatment so they can escape the bugs? Have u put up the fans you were going to buy byet?

I wish I could but they are only 10 weeks old. And have only been outside for 2 weeks. I still have to baby sit them if I let them out. I’ve got two box fans going in the run now. And I sprayed them down with vanilla. So they are temporarily fine. No head shaking. No scratching.
