Hello everyone!

It's been a while since I've posted my concerns, which I believe is a good thing because it means my duck has been growing steadily and healthily. However recently I, along with my siblings, have noticed that there are these bugs crawling around on my duck's feathers. Initially, we were unconcerned because we do keep him outside on the grass for most of the day, so we thought that it was just some grass creatures that have made their way onto him. BUT, over the span of a week or so, we slowly began noticing that he was carrying way more than a few on his body. When I sneak in some cuddle time with him, I noticed multiple creatures crawling all his body, one even tried to sneak into his eye! I managed to take out the one that was approaching his eye, but when I try to pick out the others, they just burrow further into his feathers! It's been a very frustrating task and it hurts me to see him so distraught. He's been grooming for way more than usual, and I'm sure that this can be chalked up to those pesky bugs! I'm scared that these bugs are biting him or are slowly chomping off at his skin. I don't want to even think about what happens if these bugs crawl into his eye and aren't as docile as I first imagined! Please help! I know that there isn't a possible way to exterminate them all form my lawn, but I was wondering if there is a bathless cleanser for ducks that wouldn't affect his feathers? Just to let you know, I let him bathe twice a day in a pool of water but it doesn't seem to help against the bugs. Please help!

Thank You,
QuakieChan

Fleas jump and are dark in color what color are these bugs?
Quite right @Lil Drake40! I'm gonna go look for some pictures for everyone.

In the US, treatment for mites, lice, and fleas is the same no matter what the bug is, one treats with permethrin or spinosad. One should treat birds and coops.

If you see them crawling around, I am thinking a type of flea too. Even though they jump, they also crawl and if an animal is infested, they will go deeper under the fur (in this case feathers) when you go to look (seeing them on dogs and this is what they do). Fleas also crawl around eyes.

Do you happen to have other animals in or around your home?
Mites and lice are found at the shaft and vent areas.
Either way, you want to treat the duck. So, permethrin spray or dust is probably your best bet - I think it takes care of most parasites that live on the animal. Flea powder could work too, but in case it isn't fleas, permethrin might be the best choice. It is called poultry dust or spray at tsc.
You will also want to clean the duck's bedding and housing areas.
If it were me, I might allow the duck access to bathing water all day long if possible. Or at least a bucket of water (container deep enough to dunk it's head in) so that it can preen with anytime it needs to.

Lice and mites are sometimes found all over the body.

Agree, yes, treat the duck, and perhethrin should treat lice, fleas, roost mites, but in some parts of the country the Northern Fowl Mite is resistant to permethrin. :(

Yes, clean area and spray with permethrin.

You should create a byc article - with of course giving credit due to the photos and such. :thumbsup
That! Yeah, I've been thinking about that, but it's so hard to find pictures that I could use in an article without violating copyright laws.
