I already have an EE with mites that I'm dealing with. Cut scene back to my 3yo RIR hen who hasn't been feeling herself - I decided to give her an epsom bath *just* in case she was eggbound.
Then I noticed the things in the water.
At first I thought they were bits of straw that must have been on her underside and got carried in when I took her to the bath and I thought nothing of it when I thought I spotted something near her eye.
Then when I finished I wrapped her in a towel and began to carry her back through the house and outside when something crawled onto my hand.
I recognized it as the same kind of insect that I had also seen a week or two before - I had thought it had just crawled onto her leg or something.
Luckily I was able to keep my composure long enough as the thing kept crawling on it for someone to snap a quick reference photo for you guys. (And yes, I did smoosh it right afterward)
While I retreat to burn everything I own, here goes:

It's chicken lice. They can't survive on you or any mammals (though the creepy, crawly feeling can persist for hours) and a permethrin spray will take care of them. Since they can't survive off of the chicken for long, just spray the chicken (especially around the vent area) and burn the bedding.

Also, you might consider setting up a dust bath.

They’re free ranged so get all the dust they want. But I will definitely look into getting one. Thanks for the reply!

If you know someone that has a wood fire you can make a dust bath from the ashes. My mother swears by it. You can put it in the dirt areas they bath in. I would still treat the animals as they are already infested, so medications first and then for management after do the ash.

It suffocates mitts and lice

*UPDATE* So I got the spray and decided to treat everyone as I’ve noticed that all of them have been preening often and I know two for sure have them. I don’t know if I did it right though, I will follow up soon. I spritzed their backs with a bit and then used my gloved hands to work it through their feathers, making sure to get the vent. I watched a tutorial video afterwards, although it might have been a good idea to watch that before. :p
