Build your coop before chicks arrive

Amen to that!

We started on our coop before the chicks arrived, but didn't finish it in time. Soooo, we had a bunch of 5 week old chicks in a too-small brooder while we were outside feverishly running fencing.

Never again.

Oh I hear you loud and clear. I have six 25 week olds, five 12 week olds and twenty-one 6 week olds and the coop is still being built.

they reside in a tractor, a hot tub frame and a make shift brooder in my garage.

And we moved into our new house on August 1st so that move was lots of fun too.

Believe me you are not alone My DS and DH started our coop in May the Chicks were already 1 month old We had twenty seven in one large brooder and ten in another Then Hubby got his turkeys six of them so we started another brooder Along comes June, still not finished then along comes another order of 25 chicks. These I had to put in the utility room in front of my washer and dryer The others were in the spare room By July I was going bonkers and told them both that i had had it. Finally the coop was finished We put them in it before it was even painted I couldn't take another day. Can you say chicken dust its still hanging in the air in the spare room I dont think I will ever get it all out. Everything has a fine coating of white dust on it. I made a descision NO MORE CHICKS IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!
Now if we can just get them separated into breeds we will be fine.

OY! Just got my twelve mixed something orathers into the coop. My guy asked me the first night if I was nervous. I said "a bit but more relieved - couldn't handle the stress of their beady little eyes begging me for a better life than a cardboard box could offer!". They were in my office. I have one zillion little bitty pieces of paper - receipts etc.. for tax forms etc... and each and every one is covered in dust!!! Hellup hellup!

But they are so cute and I went and sat in the coop and meditated with them and that's the best thing ever.

I ordered my chicks and got 'em thinking it would push my dad a little harder into 'wanting' to build the chicken coop because I know he hates them in the garage and told him if I did not have a coop for them to stay in for winter they would be staying the bathroom/laundry room all winter. I want a coop winterized completly every year I get chickens and I loose more than half of them including my La Fleche I was mad at him. He wouldn't let them stay in the garage because they ate his $100 remote control plane. Perfect hole right in the wing, I guess wood tastes good.

This week I hope to finish my coop and run, I wert to the feedstore to get dog food this week, and there they had two week old chicks running around in the outdoor pens!! They told me the end of Sept. they would have new chicks, Now it will be at least two weeks before they put in another order!! I was disappointed to say the least. Now I plan to either go by, or call to see when the new baby chicks are in this time.

This was our answer to "too many chickens - not enough coop" problem. It is a temporary fix to get the chicks out of the too small brooders until the coops can be finished. We put up the runs and this tent was set up inside away from the edges. It's working great for now, but we will have to get the coops in before it gets cold here.
