I'm a new guy around here and I figured I'd post up a thread on this idea I have to turn one of my barn stalls into a coop.
The barn is vacant. I use it to park a tractor and other equipment for my job.
The stall is approx 12'x12', and I am currently working on putting down a floor of plywood.
I am a total DIY'er and I'm planning to build wood nesting boxes as well as a roost for my flock.
A few questions...
How many nesting boxes would be recommended for a flock of 10-15 birds?
is a pop door necessary? I'd rather not cut through the side of a stall door, or the side of my barn if I don't have to.
Right now the stall is not completely enclosed, there is a roof over the barn that has a leak (will be fixed soon), but I'd like to put a roof over the stall for storage…thoughts?
I plan to place the roost over a piece of plywood that can be removed, then cleaned into my compost bin and put back under the roost…good idea?
Does the stall need to be insulated? I understand coops need good ventilation…the barn is pretty old…nothing is sealed so I'd say it's pretty vented.
Any info/other info you folks can provide would be welcome as I'm totally new to this!
Thanks!
