I'd like to add "Headlamp" to this list. It keeps your hands free to do what you need to do. I also highly recommend getting one with a red light. My birds aren't lap birds and aren't used to being handled. If I have to separate one, chasing it won't work because they're fast and I'm slow. I go in at night with the headlamp red light on. They know something is there, but don't get off the roost because they can't see well enough to know where they're going.

So would you crush the tums, add water, then dose with a syringe?

Like Overo Mare says, you pop it into their mouth. Chickens are actually pretty good at swallowing, since they do not have teeth.
