Building a pond?

The pond I used to have was always so dirty, looking for ideas on making a new one. I have an excavator and a bobcat, so I can dig anything. But do I really need to be able to drain it? Or will something bigger work with goldfish or something else to keep it cleaner? Our ground is also rockier than the last place, so not sure how well long it would hold the water. Any ideas?

Unless it is spring fed and drains naturally, it will either need to be very large so that it will have a natural biological filter, or it will need a mechanical filter. Otherwise, you could drain it mechanically but if you're lalking about a pond big enough that you will need a Bobcat to dig it, I wouldn't think refilling it every few weeks with a garden hose wouldn't be an option.
