Building a ramp.

I need to build a ramp 52" long and 17" wide. Any pointers on the best material to use?

Why so wide? I would use a 2x12 and put 3/4" cleats spaced 3 inches apart.

That's the width of the door and for some reason I thought the ramp should be as wide as the door (-;

I am of the opinion that a solid platform with good traction has made teaching my flock to enter/exit their pop door a much quicker task - I just built out of leftovers with 2x4's over 3/4" plywood

I just use 1 x 8 for a ramp and put shallow saw cuts every inch.

That's a good idea, do you have to sweep the cuts out often?

I've not cleaned the ramp ever.

Ramps are iconic, but for the most part, are not needed at all. Instead of a ramp, install a small landing platform for them to hop to.
Birds fly up to roosts, to nest boxes, etc. They can come and go through elevated pop holes the same way.

Doesn't that depend on the breed of bird? Some can't fly, some are just too big to get enough lift and if they are your pets you want them to have a happy stress free life.
