It's beautiful, Steve!

I'm sure they are letting in the light and heat - but soon they'll be clouded with dust!

It gets very cold, but as I have read here, as long as the coop is draft free and dry that is all a chicken needs. At the present time, there are no plans to insulate.

I don't think it's necessary unless you want to Steve. I still get a lot of eggs all winter with 14 hours of artificial light.

My present coop is uninsulated and we had one of the coldest (still is) I can remember, but the girls still laid eggs. On the coldest of days I did put a heat lamp in their coop.

I insulated not for the cold, but for the heat. It gets cold in the coop, but it's about 15-20° warmer than outside - but in the summer it's a good 10-15° cooler inside the coop than out - chickens can deal with the cold better than they can deal with the heat! I'm happy we insulated, however, I do wish we had known more about ventilation. Leaving the windows open can get dicey when it's blowing cold out there. So far so good, though, my big BO roo hasn't lost anything to frostbite, and this has been a deuzey of a winter!
